Kent City Schools Travel Plan Study

Public Meeting for Kent City Schools Travel Plan

Safe Routes to School in Kent

What it is:

Safe Routes to School is an international movement that uses policies, programs, and infrastructure to improve safety conditions near K-12 schools and encourage students to walk and bike to school when it is safe to do so. In Ohio, the Department of Transportation's Safe Routes to School Program provides funding to facilitate the development of projects and activities that enable and encourage students to walk or bike to school. Safe Routes Program funds may be used for sidewalks, crosswalks, traffic signal improvements, signage, etc.

What's happening in Kent:

The City of Kent and Kent City Schools have joined together to improve safety by creating a School Travel Plan (STP) that includes all six schools in the district. Community engagement was an essential tool in developing the STP. The project team used several strategies to collect public input including a caregiver survey, a meeting with the Kent Schools administration, and a stakeholder session. The STP includes a list of needs to improve safety when walking and biking to school. Once the plan has been approved the City will have the opportunity to apply for funds from the Ohio Department of Transportation to resolve the needs.

Community Feedback:School Crossing

A public meeting to discuss the recommendations will be held on Wednesday, February 28, 5-7 p.m. in the cafeteria at Theodore Roosevelt High School. The meeting will follow an open house format, with a formal presentation at 6 p.m. Attendees will hear about the recommendations for the Kent STP and have an opportunity to provide feedback.
