The Community Development Team is involved with a number of activities that impact the overall development of Kent.  These activities include Development Review, Historic Preservation, Neighborhood Development, Community Development Block Grant administration, Economic Development Assistance, Zoning and Building Permit Approvals,  administration and enforcement of the City's Zoning and Subdivision Codes.

The Community Development Team is here to provide a one-stop-answer to all of your development project questions, regardless of size.

The Planning and Zoning Division implements Community Development Block Grants for various community needs within the City.  Some of these funds are used to implement  an Owner Occupied Housing Program.  Questions concerning these programs should be referred to Bridget Susel, Director of Community Development.

Heather Phile, Development Planner, can answer questions about zoning regulations and zoning permit approval.  Heather is the staff liaison to the Board of Zoning Appeals and the Architectural Advisory Review Board.

Development engineering and stormwater questions can be answered by Jennifer Barone, Development Engineer.  Jennifer provides staff assistance to the Planning Commission.

The Planning and Zoning Division of the Community Development Department provides staff support to the Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, Sustainability Commission, Architectural Review Board and the Community Reinvestment Area Housing Council.

Help Desk

As part of the Community Development Department’s One-Stop-Permitting-Shop, the department offers a Help Desk every morning from 8:00 am – 9:00 am.  You can apply for and receive your building permit within one hour, depending on the size of your project.

Ohio Historic Preservation 2018 Update

The City of Kent's Community Development Department is required to complete an environmental review of all activities that are assisted with state and/or federal funding. A part of this environmental review includes sending information about the activity to the Ohio Historic Preservation Office (OHPO) if the activity involves a structure that is 50 years of age or older.

The City has a programmatic agreement with the Ohio Historic Preservation Office (OHPO) which identifies certain activities that are exempt from OHPO review. For activities that are considered exempt, the City compiles a list each year and makes it available to the public through the City's website.
